The new space was added to give Omaha-area associates a modern, comfortable working environment as an option for those who need (or want) to work in an office setting. It also allows Nelnet to continue recruiting talented professionals from strategic markets across the country – and grow their talent pool from coast to coast.

The new office offers a number of amenities to make the working environment as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, including:

• A modern design with an open concept atmosphere, ideal for collaboration and teamwork.
• Patio seating that provides a versatile outdoor space for team members to take a break, work, or enjoy lunch in the fresh air.
• An eating area with fridge for convenience, flavored still or sparkling water and coffee machines, and a space for meal preparation.
• Floor-to-ceiling windows that bring in natural light and stunning views.
• Multiple private office spaces for team members to collaborate or work in individually.

The opening of this new space was celebrated with an open house for area associates, where team members could connect with colleagues and explore the new space while enjoying a catered meal at lunch and a social hour in the afternoon.

The work environment has changed a lot over the last year, and our main priority was to ensure the safety of customers and associates. We were quick to adapt to drastic changes by transitioning associates to work from home indefinitely, and we’re glad that associates have responded positively to these measures. Here’s some of the actions we took:

Working from Home

As a first step to protect associates’ wellbeing, Nelnet made it possible for nearly all 6,500 associates to work from the safety of their own homes in just a matter of days. Our Information Technology team expanded Nelnet’s virtual network access and increased internet capabilities to address the new environment.

Exercising Extreme Caution in Office Return Plans

As the vaccinated population increases throughout the country, it will become safer to move work back into the office. Nelnet’s COVID response team has been monitoring available information and meticulously planning for associates to safely return to the office when they are ready. These plans establish robust guidelines to ensure clean workspaces, socially distanced floor plans, and masks, wipes, and hand sanitizer throughout each office.

Plans to Offer On-Site Vaccinations

Nelnet is planning to offer vaccinations to associates once the option becomes available. Vaccines are an essential part of ending this pandemic, and we strongly recommend associates get the vaccine when possible. We are encouraging associates to receive the vaccine in the meantime if they are eligible, but intend for on-site vaccinations to be an option if it will help down the road.

It’s always heartwarming when we hear about associates who care about their co-workers, and last year our team in Madison stepped in to save the life of a co-worker, and we just had to share it.

In September, a Madison associate went above and beyond to help a co-worker. While continuing to work in the office to perform essential duties this year, the Madison Facilities team already demonstrated incredible teamwork – but on Sept. 14, Dave Kinney saved his co-worker Tony Ketterer’s life.

On that day, Dave passed Tony’s office and happened to notice that Tony was slumped over his desk due to what they would later learn was a heart attack. Dave immediately began to perform first aid, then CPR.

The entire Facilities team then began the chain of care that they have all been trained in, and help arrived within five minutes. Tony was immediately transported to the hospital, where, after a few days, he recovered and was released. The EMTs stated that Dave and the team’s quick actions were the bridge needed to save Tony’s life.

Thank you to Tony and Dave for sharing your story. It’s important to know what to do in these workplace emergencies, so try not to panic and call 911 or the local number for emergency assistance as soon as possible. In some situations, you can help further by getting CPR or First Aid certified. The Red Cross has a variety of online and in-person classes for emergency training services that could save a life.
